My neighbour has a BYRON PORTABLE DOOR CHIME (http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/byron-portable-door-chime_1_43527.html). For some reason, the ‘sounder’ is playing up.
He initially thought the battery in the door push was faulty, but this was still over 3vdc.
The mains powered sounder does throw out a sound,,,, but like a strangled cat. I switched modes, only to be met by a longer and more pitiable strangled cat. I swapped jumpers – to no avail, & I tried adjusting the only ‘pot’ in it, again to no avail.
As far as I am aware, the receiver is getting the correct signal from the door push or it wouldn’t sound at all.
Any ideas please ?

Is it new?

Has it ever worked?

Is it old?

Return it for a replacement?

Are either of you any good at fault-finding on electronics?

Has anything happened that might have damaged it?

Check connections to, or replace, the transducer?

Check that the PSU is working OK?

Buy a new one?

Sounds like a component (resistor/capacitor) which affects the pitch/decay of the chime has failed. Or it could be the power supply has failed giving low voltage.

Throw it in the bin and get one of these

and one of these.

Cheers BAS:

Is it new? About 15/18 months old.

Has it ever worked? Yep - up to a couple of days ago.

Return it for a replacement? Bit too old - have dropped 'em a line anyway (you never know !?)

Are either of you any good at fault-finding on electronics? Ish ! Got a multi tester, but no expert.

Has anything happened that might have damaged it? Not as far as either of us are aware.

Check connections to, or replace, the transducer? Visually (!?) all looks well, clean & tight. Transducer ??

Check that the PSU is working OK? It's built-in to the receiver body. Havn't checked the output yet.

Buy a new one? Last resort - but we like fixin things don't we ?
