Hi guys ,

now about 6 weeks ago i noticed a green and yellow cable hanging lose under the sink , so today when i had my immersion heater fitted , i asked the guy to look at it and he said it was a spare one and he would cut it off , he has cut it and u can see where its been cut , im a bit worried is that o k ?
and ive been reading on the internet and i dont know now if he has cut a spare one or wheather it was the one thats meant to prtect u againest high voltage etc ,

it wasnt connected to nothing one end , and the other end was coming from a pipe ,

what do u think ??????

i could include a photo if u want

is it in the kitchen or in the bathroom?

Have a look at the incoming water main. Close to the stopcock near where it comes into the house there should be a G&Y clamped to the metal pipe, and a similar one on the metal gas pipe near where it enters the house. There should also be a G&Y close to your electricity meter, going into either or both of the company fuse or consumer unit (fusebox). These ones are particularly important.

Photos will help

can u all see the pic ok???

no, you need to put in the URL [net]153046/28193_25784618.jpg[/net]

here it is

Also, you can update your posts using the "edit" button if you forget anything.

I can't tell from that pic. Take anoother one from further back. Can you see where the rest of the cable goes? Have a look at the incoming water main, gas main and round the meter, and show us pics of any G&Y around them.

i will try and take another in a sec ,

can u see in the pic where he has cut it ? he told me its part of the earth bonding system and he wouldnt of removed it if it wasnt safe to do so ,

do you think thats right ???

The old wire might previously have gone to a metal sink, if there used to be an old stainless steel one that has since been removed. You no longer have to bond sinks, only the metal pipes that connect to them, so if that is the case, it would be OK to remove it.

it looks like the G&Ys in your picture are bonding together the hot water and the cold water pipes, and then going off somewhere else. That's not wrong, but we need to know where the cable then continues on to. It might go to the consumer unit (fusebox). Can you see? Does it connect to any other pipes, such as the gaspipe?

my gas meter is postioned to the right hand side of the photo and from what i can see theres no green and yellow cable going in to that,

i have a gas boiler in the kitchen , and a electric shower in the bathroom , and my fuse box and immersion heater is in airing cupboard and my electric meter is outside my front door , i live in a flat on the ground floor ,
i do not know where else the cable is going to .

OK. Have a look for G&Y near the meter and near the consumer unit, please, and photo what you see.

It looks to me as if the G&Y might be going to the left, behind the pipes in your picture.

The metal gas pipe should be bonded, from memory, within 2 feet of entering the house (if the meter is outside) or of the meter, if the meter is inside, and on the consumer's side of the meter and stopcock. So should the incoming water main.

Luckily it is not a difficult or complex job to do. Is it a rented flat, or do you own it?
