Hello,

Wondering if anyone knows anything about this. I live in a terraced house built towards the end of the 90s, I believe it was 1999. We've always had a slightly smelly loft, but never thought much of it... Then when we were having something else done a plumber told us it could be to do with a malfunctioning AAV valve...

Recently I went investigating to see if I could find this AAV valve when I went to look there just seemed to be an open pipe (picture attached) under insulation.

Is this normal/expected? Any guidance very much appreciated!

If that's a soil pipe then yes, that's where the smell's coming from. Need to investigate a little to see if your main sewer drain is vented, if not that needs to go up through the roof and vent outside, if it has another vent somewhere then get your plumber to lengthen that pipe a bit and pop a durgo on it
