Thanks foxhole. You say 'build' but googling 'mdf shelf units' shows a lot of ready made things on the market, hopefully only requiring assembly. All the ones I have looked at are either one foot or two feet depth, so I'll see if I can find something that uses the available 18 inches depth.

A sheet of mdf (around £32 a board) will rip to 3 pieces approx 16” wide giving you both sides and enough for a few shelves , ready made will be more expensive .
