I'm not surely that the word "hardly" really constitutes a 'negative', does it? If it makes you any happier, try replacing "hardly ever" with "often (if ever)" - which l;eaves my meaning essentially unchanged, but I don't think would leave any suggestion of a double-negative, would it?
