Hi
Random question not entirely DIY but of course something many of us encounter..... I'm getting a 100Kg glulam delivered (5M long) and was wondering how to get it off the lorry. Cost is an extra £150 quid if they send a hiab (probably +vat too!). Does anyone think it's easy enough to slide off and lower to one end with me and a hopefully helpful lorry driver at the other end shuffling it along a bit? - it only needs to move a few meters on level ground.

Thanks, Dave

I could pull that off easily with my strong paws!!

Yes but you're a strong dog and I'm an old man :giggle: and the lorry driver's mood on the day is part of the unsolved equation...

I would hope the driver will decline any such offer, way too heavy for that kind of shenanigans. It's one thing two burly blokes humping it into the back garden or whatever, another getting it off the lorry. You need some extra bodies or pay for the crane.

I use a sheet of ply to offload heavy item , slip one end under the item and drag to edge , ply tips at pivot point and weight slides down board , longer the board the slower the decent .

Don't you have a couple of trestles to lift it onto?

How much will redlivery cost if you don't get a friendly driver who can help. Or one that can't help "because of health and safey Guv" and he just turns back to the warehouse with it.

I'd make a platform with trestles or pallets about 2'6" off the ground as a halfway house for one end and then take the other end off the lorry.

£20 for the delivery driver will buy a lot of goodwill!

Moving it after delivery will likely cost you a crate of cold beer and some pizza for a bunch of your mates or family members

Regards

Tet

Well I'm half tempted to chuck an old mattress on the ground, rope up the beam to a tree or a neighbour's fence, then ask him to drive away fairly quickly! :giggle:

My mobility scooter, weighs in at 120Kg, with a 1m wheelbase, much of the weight at the rear end. I transported it on my trailer, maybe 2 feet from the ground. I was lifted on, by two of us, lifting the front wheels on first, then rolled forward, whilst lift the rear end. Unloading it, we did the reverse - just two of us, lifting the weighty rear end, easing it back, then lifting the lighter front end off. Keep in mind, a scooter is an awkward bulky shape, with limited solid places to get hold of. Your 5m is a regular shape, it's length gives you lots of leverage, making it much easier....

If there are two of you, then it should be easy to get it off, sliding it, off to the point of balance, then lower the end to the ground, whilst sliding it further back. Then, finally lift the remaining end off.

keep in mind any "drag"can do loads off damage, especially to wood
so iff the beam is a visible feature then protect or at least top edge down
