anti siphon

My w/machine's standpipe goes into a p-trap which appears to be a vented type (or is it anti-syphon) - see pic attached. My question is, what is the purpose of the knob on the top of the trap and should it need adjusting to help against gurgling noises? I'm reluctant to loosen it off any in case...
