I plan to lay a 14mm engineered floor (B&Q Marcy - softwood ply with oak top layer) downstairs over a concrete floor.
It would be nice to use an underlay that is more insulating than the typical 5mm fibreboard, to loose less heat and have the floor feel slightly warmer to the feet.
Would it be...
We are covering our garage and have painted a liquid DPM. We then plan on adding 50mm of celotex to the floor, with some timber supports in places around doors and where gym equipment will be as we've read this is suggested. We can't seem to find any specific details though on how we construct...
Hello
I cleaned up my garage floor and wanted to lay down 100mm PIR insulation, TG chipboard... It is a concrete base floor at the moment with dips. See picture attached.
I have read to put KILN dried sand on the areas....
Any suggestions?
Hi,
Keen not to cowboy this part of my build so looking for some advice. Seems impossible to find anything on school of youtube but maybe i'm using the wrong terms.
Room is small, so 2.1m x 4m. Will be used as an office/gaming room. Desk and a sofa will be the heavy furniture.

I removed some old 27mm T&G flooring. To remove bounce, I then double-sistered and leveled the 75mm floor joists with 2x 45mm sisters. Now I'm thinking about how to install the new 20mm engineered floorboards.
I have 7mm spare. The final height of the floor cannot be raised.
Ideally, I'd make...
Hello,
I have a floating floor in my downstairs toilet area which due to a small water leak that remained undetected has damaged a section of the floor to the point i now have a hole that is about 2ft x 3 ft wide. Underneath the flooring is polystyrene blocks so there is no joists in which to...
We've had a big garden studio built, and in an effort to save money on the escalating costs of having it done out (and because we didn't like any of the laminate options available to us), we opted to finish the flooring ourselves.
We want to keep costs down, so are looking to install simple...
I've recently installed a floating floor over a concrete slab in a garden workshop.
Due to height concerns (door threshold/plug sockets) I went for 25mm PIR under 18mm T&G OSB (with DPM and slip layers).
I've got a lot more floor deflection than expected, would 3.6mm plywood laid perpendicular...
Hi there,
We have already bought our 18mm thick tongue and groove Solid Oak Flooring, that is pre oiled. It's also very heavy and weighs approx 700kg across 50 sq metres.
It is currently being acclimatised for 7 days.
The concrete sub floor has has been self levelled and is mostly very level...
We have lifted up the flooring under our stairs, via 150mm ecotherme covered with 22mm caber deck. We will be using as a washroom with a washing machine sat on top.
What would be the best flooring where there may be moister or water if we every get a leak.
Had tiles with flexible adhesive on...
Hello! Just looking for a bit of advice on where to start as we're new to all this! The vinyl kitchen floor in our new house was sagging so today we decided to investigate. We have uncovered several layers of board resting on uneven, randomly spaced planks of various types of wood. Some of the...
Part converting garage to 2.4m x 2.4m utility. Have levelled concrete floor, 1200dpm, fitted 100mm then 50mm (90 degrees) solid insulation. Vapour barrier then tongue and groove 18mm MR chipboard, glued. Was quite pleased. Have recently read on some insulation websites that there should be...
Hi
I'm looking to transfer my conservatory to a proper room with a solid roof and new glazing frames. And want it to adhere to building regs so I can remove the French doors.
It has electric sockets, a small radiator and electric underfloor heating under a tiled ceramic floor already so I'm...
Hi all,
for our kitchen floor the plan has been to make a floating floor, as follows from bottom up: concrete, self leveling compound, DPM, two layers of insulation (the old kitchen was split in half, so the first layer is 20mm in the front half and 90mm in the rear half, and then a second...
Hi all
Having kitchen re-done by a builder (tearing down a wall.and new higher roof at the end)
Also the kitchen is currently a concrete paved area, floor level 18cm below the rest of the (Victorian) house, which is suspended timber.
I'm planning to do the floor myself to save a bit on costs...
Hi
I'm renovating a 1930s property. All ground floor floors are suspended timber except the kitchen which is (was) concrete. I have just dug this floor up to lay a new insulated floor (I will be insulating under the suspended floors too). My initial thought was to put down a damp proof membrane...
I know this sounds familiar, but have read the posts and find the info I need, so any advice appreciated.
So from top to bottom I was thinking (for garden studio);
- 225mm x 38mm wooden floor boards
- (maybe VCL or foil tape joins in celotex sheets)
- celotex
- concrete floor
Will the floor...
