Need all my light switches replaced (in USA) (Ed.)

I’m a pretty decent DIYer, I’ve done different handyman work since I was a kid with my dad and have done a lot since becoming an adult. However I feel like this situation is beyond my skills. We purchased a house and nearly every light switch is different. We have some paddle dimmers, some...

    Help with replacing landing light

Hi guys, I’ve been trying to replace my landing light all night last night and I just wanted to see if I’ve wired it up correctly before I connect it up. I followed this diagram that I found. And I have a blue wire and yellow wire left, I’m assuming the yellow wire is the switch wire, I’ve...

Overriding sensor in outside security lights

I have a couple of security lights with PIR sensors. However, they are fairly old and are failing, so I want to replace them. Both of them have halogen bulbs and switching the power off and on quickly, overrides the sensor/timer so that the light stays on. This is useful when, for example...

    Wiring Advice - New Lights

I’ve just removed my old doorbell, which was wired through the mains (replacing it with a more modern cordless doorbell). This left me with a bit of mains flex sticking out of the wall just above my fusebox in a hallway cupboard. I’d like to use that to power two 11W LED ceiling lights (bought...

    Wireless Wall Switch?

In my flat I have a long hallway which has little LED ceiling lights. These are controlled by 3 conventional 2 way wall switches - all the lights are on the same circuit and come on at the same time. I'd like to add a 4th wall switch in a particular spot at the end of the hallway. I checked out...

    Mounting a heavy light

Hi, I'm looking to install a heavy (about 4kg) light to replace some old ones in our living room. The original one was just mounted on the plasterboard. I'm not confident that this will support the light, so want to mount it into the beam above the plasterboard ceiling. This is however 85mm...

Cable post lamps off existing junction box

Hi I've got an outdoor security light at the front of the house - cable exits the external wall into a junction box and then the light connects off the junction box. I've stuck a photo below. I'm relaying the driveway this year and thinking about fitting a couple of free standing post lights at...

    Replacing triple switch with dimmer?

Hi My kitchen has 12 downlights, with a triple switch at the entrance, which turns different sections of the room, one of them only turns on and off two of the downlights which seems silly. There is also another switch by the garden door which turns on and off 5 downlights, the same as one of...

    What 'protective oil'?

This isn't quite an electrics question, but it relates to a sticker on some outdoor lights that we have. I am not sure where else to post this question. The lights we have are pretty common and they look like this (NOT THE ACTUAL PRODUCT WE BOUGHT, BUT OURS LOOK VERY SIMILAR TO THIS)...

When were mains (230V/240V) underwater lights banned?

I know some very old water fountains use to have mains powered underwater lights. Just wondering what the history is behind when the were banned and made presumably illegal? Regards: Elliott.

    Peugeot 206 CC, lights issue

Hello forum. I have a - in my opinion - strange problem with the lights on my Peugeot 206 CC. First off, it's a 2001, 1.6 16V with a good history for service. It makes no fuzz, doesn't chew oil or weird sounds. All of a sudden, the rear lights, number plate lights, rear foglight and the front...

1.5mm² lighting cables - 3 lights- do they have to be in-line?

3 lights. It would be easier if the cable went to 1st light, with 2nd and 3rd light cables both spurred off from 1st light, in a Y formation. I could do it linear, but easier in a Y. What do regs allow? Thanks, Dain
