Hello, I'm just wondering how to tell if the joists in your loft are strong enough, whether just for storage or to use as a regular room?
I'm partly asking because we would like to eventually board the loft void above the rear part of our Edwardian house to use for storage, after insulating...
Looking at boarding the garage out to help with storage and possibly adding insulation later on.
My question is can I remove the diagonal piece of wood? So It makes it easier to lay the boarding?
Also what do people do when it comes to filling in the joists? How do you fill the small gaps?
I’m adding 90mm of timber across existing 170mm joists to raise loft boards so I can get 260mm of insulation under them
Do I need to use treated timber for this job or is untreated OK?

my upstairs bathroom renovation is finished now
so time to insulate the loft
my rafts are spaced 60cm apart
raft height 10cm
currently there is 100mm insulation between rafts ( house was build 1990) might replace some of insulation
