What about this scheme to give £2,000 for your old van, does this only apply if you are buying a brand new van or does it apply to preowned vans as well.

Who knows. If the conditions are anything like the Ghurkas' right to settle in the UK, it won't be worth the paper it's written on.

I think the two grand is for....

If we start letting people like the Ghurkas in there won't be any room left for the illegals that would put a lot of lawyers out work the knock on effect could have serious implications for the economy.

This scheme may have just doubled the value of my old car thats over 10 years old.

I can sell it for 1K so the buyer gets2K for it :D

We were discussing this over coffee in the pub at lunchtime. The spark with us is due to buy a new van anytime now and will be keeping his old van.

He knows of a scrap van on sale for parts for £50.00 and is going to purchase that (if someone else has not already had the same idea) for the PE. £1,950.00 clear profit.

They will probably require you to have owned it for a minimum period of time.

And have a gallantry award from the Crimean War.

Headlines, that's all they are after, nothing of any substance.

John,
Tell the sparky to save his fifty quid because there are certain clauses in the gimmick:

Somebody wanting to participate in the scheme would begin negotiations for a new car at the dealership by providing proof of the car's age and the fact that they have owned the vehicle for at least a year.

This would prevent somebody buying a very cheap car from a scrapyard and using it to claim the discount.

The car would also have to be inspected, either by the dealer or an official Authorised Treatment Facility. Once these formalities have been completed, a certificate would be presented which would enable the motorist to buy a new model.

I'm wondering how people go from owning a car worth less than 2grand to buying a brand new one?

And if they can afford it how is a vehicle probably built abroad and profits going to a parent company which is not british going to benefit the british economy

Typical discounts on new cars have been much more than two thousand pounds: this scheme sounds like it offers a much less good bargain than people have been getting. Some new cars have been selling for less than the same models secondhand, bizarrely.

However, in normal times new cars depreciate by such a large amount as soon as they roll off the forecourt that they're not worth buying, if you're using your own money.

For all kinds of reasons, this is a stupid scheme. However, this government can't actually implement anything it aims to do, and this plan probably won't be any different.
