Using a slide rule  There was a mathematician called Hall - who had one hexagonal ball - the size of his tool ( using a slide rule ) was 9/10 the square root of F*** All.

Take it you don't know then ?

"1.02264 takes into account the changes in the volume of gas based on temperature and pressure."

Is that what you wanted?

On the right track - but how to derive the figure ?

just a guess but 22-23 millibars(above atmospheric) is the pressure in your gas main after the meter I believe, so 1.02264 would be a good average?

I reckon it's an arbitrary figure arrived at by BG in an attempt to fool us into thinking our gas bill is actually not increasing faster than inflation.

As the temperature of our gas supply must vary according to the weather, then surely this 1.02264 number must change to take account of variations in temp and pressure? Surely it can't be constant?

See Above for a more reasonable explanation;) ;)

Where's Stephen Hawking when you need him? ;) ;)

Whilst having a google - as you do, I found
http://www.sequoia33.co.uk/rupert.htm hence 'Rupert the Bear'

Gordon Wrenn one time Space Department, Defence Research Agency, Farnborough... I believe.

A small step to here http://www.sequoia33.co.uk/contents.htm His take on AV 'The Labour Leader Election: Implications for AV'

Lo and behold on the same page '1.02264 Nonsense A critical look at your gas bill' Click for it Best account of 1.02264 I have found, he did some research too.

I found that if you multiply the answer to life, the universe and everything by the constant, you arrive at the median IQ of a Paul Hardcastle fan. (ie, not, nenenene nineteen)
