I have recently noticed some 10a mcbs feeding lights in my house and 40a mcbs feeding sockets. Is this alright? I thought that they had to be 6a for lights and 40a for sockets.

It depends on how many lamps on lighting circuit and size of cable, cable run, as for your sockets are you sure you were not looking at an rcd does it have a test button? if not it should be 30 0r 32A but again it depends on size of cable
