Hi,
I've just connected a washing machine to plastic pipe.
I fitted the metal on/off tap to the pipe, using an olive plus plastic insert. The end of the insert appears to be holding the pipe from fully going into the fitting so I think the olive is skewed.
This doesn't seem right, so I'd like to know the correct way, please.

Show us a picture. As long as there is approximately 6mm of pipe after the olive inside the fitting it should be fine.

And if there isn't the is no harm in cutting the end of the insert down or off; you need the bit inside the pipe for crush resistance but the fatter part of the insert that matches the pipe outer diameter is really only there to help not ruin the seals on a plastic fitting

Depending on the make of fittings. John Guest - plain plastic inserts for compression and can be used in any other fitting (superseal for their own push fit fittings for extra sealing) - Hep2O - metal rumble fittings for everything.

If you use JG superseal inserts with compression fittings, they can be difficult to fit properly that and olives tend to cut them when fitting
