Hi,

We’re in the process of buying a house with an existing single storey extension built in the 1980s. The sellers say it was signed off by building control at the time although obviously there are no records now. If we buy, we may look at going above the existing extension to create a new bedroom and while I know that the existing footings would need to be inspected etc I wondered what the requirements were back then and the likelihood of being able to go above. They say they think the footings are “standard 9 inches/225mm”.

Does anyone know?

Thanks,

Planning and BC are separate. Check on line for the planning history. If it was permitted development or granted planning permission, Building Control should still have a separately approved the structure/footings, contact them. If no records, then the risk is yours.
