1996 fiesta key/imobiliser

HI my grandad's fiesta has stopped working, i went to it this morning to have a look and the red light by the clock is sometimes staying on sometimes off sometimes flashing and sometimes fading out, when i first tried to start it it was firing but not starting (red light on) then it stopped and there is now no spark, i had a look in the cowling for the ignition barrel and the the loop for key reading was loose , i opened it up and there was a thin magnet loop which has broken up i rebuilt it but when i took it away from the key with the key in the ignition the light by the clock started flashing if i put it back then the light stayed on or faded out?

any ideas as he realys on his car to get to hospital and the like

get a new reciever for around the barrel.They are about 12 quid then let me know if this has worked or not.
What size engine is it and have you a spare key.|Also did it have any faults in the past or did it just not start.
