Morning all I would appreciate some advice. Having recently retired I’m busying myself with painting the cast iron gutters, wooden soffits & barge boards and the stone reveals around the windows. The 3 Johnstones paints all say to apply a 2nd coat within 2-4 hours, which I’ve done. This is something I’ve never noticed before, is it normal? More importantly our house is on top of a hill near the west coast and is exposed to all the wind and rain so I had planned on applying another coat of paint for additional protection. Should I apply another 2 coats within 2-4 hours? Would I be wasting paint and time?

Many thanks for your help guys.

If you leave too long the second coat won't stick. You would need to undercoat and start again.

What's the paint? Might find more information in the application data sheet online or phone technical

In the old days the solvent based Dulux Trade Weathershield primer used to say apply the oilbased undercoat within 4 hours, or wait 16.

Which paints are you using?

It may be the case that the second coat "etches/melts" into the previous coat, hence the need to apply the next coat pretty soon after. If they only recommend two coats, I would follow their advice, alternatively, email them.

Many thanks for the responses guys, it hadn’t occurred to me to ask their technical department for advice. I’ll drop them a message.

Thanks again.
