and this is the best brain wave that they can come up with someone needs the sack. dont suppose they though of a driving ban like the boozey driver gets. it must be a bad news day

I also heard they are introducing 2 years in prison for touching a sat nav whilst driving, as well.

I imagine it will be sneezing at the wheel, after that.

To change people's behaviour, the severity of the punishment is much less effective than the chance of being caught.

e.g. max penalty for smoking: costs £1000+ a year; early death from cancer and heart disease, but might not happen to you and might not be for 20 years or more = little effect

max penalty for smoking at work: you will be spotted immediately and lose your job = very effective

I could stand by the traffic lights in my small town and spot people using mobile phones at the rate of one a minute all day if I wanted. A £50 fine for each of then would easily cover costs and my wages. IMO it would also soon lead to a reduction.

It's jsut a head line grabber, I don't believe for one minute it would happen. It does **** me off when I see drivers mobiling away, especially on A roads / mway, sometime you can see a car drifting a bit and when you look sure enough the pratt is on the phone

heard something interesting on the radio last night, apparantly test have been done and drving with a hands free you have the same reactions as if you are ON the dink driving limit.

As making it illegal to use a mobile when driving made any difference any way, like JohnD i too can stand on any corner in my small town and see drivers on their mobiles and some dont have their seatbelts on either .Just been up the town its market day and saw one driver using a mobile is there a copper in sight no! so who is going to catch them and then jail them.

It is not a statutory 2 years for using your phone it is the maximum sentence that could be imposed. Most people will still be fined and given points etc etc.

I was going to have a hands free kit put in to my van but they are questioning the safety aspects of those now.

if you lock up a few then you will buy a hands free..
how could you even think about prison sizes

you are not thinking straight if you think theres no danger from driving while on the phone..
if you're gonna be cynical about bad news and the govt then you gotta be and write, smarter.
