2004 Corsa 1.2 - screaching noise?

Hi,

My wife has the above car and she tells me that it has started making a loud screaching noise intermittently. It comes and goes randomly and may be lasts for a minute or so at a time.

The noise can stop and then start again within a few minutes or it can be silent for a few days and then start again.

I have not heard it myself but first guesses would be a drive belt or maybe a wheel bearing? It doesn't seem to adversly effect the running of the car.

She has told me today that the last time it happened, the noise stopped when she pressed the brake pedal but this may be coincidence.

Anybody got any suggestions please before we approach a garage?

fanbelt needs tightening. It's the alternator pulley slipping. It will be worse when you have been at tickover with the lights on and it tries to recharge when you rev up.

Could be to do with blood sugar levels

If the noise stops when the brakes are applied, then the front pads and calipers need a jolly good clean!
