i have a condo built in the late 70's and I am opening up the kitchen to the living space. The studs are metal but 3" wide instead of the normal 3.5". I can't find any info on studs this size and definitely not a place to purchase more. If I can't find more I'll be left having to frame out a complete new wall with standard width studs. Anyone ever hear of this size or suggest what to do?

Morning,

This is primarily a UK site, metal stud isn't that common over here in older buildings

Just to check- you are measuring the web width (the flat part of the C) and not the flange (the part facing you when you look at the wall)? (There's plenty of availability on 3.5" web 3" flange)

Do your fire regs allow timber studs instead of steel? If so then just use 3 x 2. Though I'm not sure why you need new studs if you're opening the wall up

I didn't realize it was a uk site. Yea I'm measuring the back of the stud but I actually need more top and bottom tracks of the same width to finish the wall, not more studs. I may just reframe out in standard size studs. that wall will just be a half inch wider, which will be under the countertop anyway.

Probably cheaper and easier to do that than chase about for non standard. Keep you out of trouble for a day or so
