we plan on refitting our bathroom and want a shower bath, the ones I've seen are 5mm acrylic, would you recommend this thickness? I have seen a couple that are 8mm but twice the price. We just don't want the bath to move when we are in it as we have experienced this in the past.

Thicker is considerably better but it depends how well made it is and how well you support it. Battens on the wall(s), extra lumps of wood underneath, etc, make a vast difference.

I bought a 5mm Carron shower bath from boundary bathrooms but paid the extra £170 to have the special carronite coating which makes it even stronger...I'd recommend this.

No. Not ever.

I have seen a couple that are 8mm but twice the price.
Don't you wonder why?

Then you need to buy an 8mm bath.

You can probably spend in time and effort what you save on the cost of the bath by fitting and fiddling with additional bracing to support it, and end up with something that is sort of all right-ish, or get a heavier gauge bath in the first place.
