63 Kia (EU) Sportage 1.7 CRDi gear stick rotates

My sister has just got the car and her husband noticed that the gear stick can rotate.

Can get all the gears but it seem odd that the gear stick can rotate. Fault or the car's design?

I'm thinking of the comparison between this one and the bigger Sorrento......a two cable gear shift device if I recall.
The gearstick shouldn't rotate, there is a peg indent that I think has broken off to allow this.
The cables connect to the linkage via rose joints which give a positive connection so the gears will remain selectable - but do check the reverse selection which was the reason for me looking at the Sorrento in the first place.

The car's going back to the seller to have the gearstick and a few other teething problems sorted out but thanks for the input John.
