Every time i switch the electric shower on at the heating switch on the wall the red light is dimmer than usual. it goes off when the water is turned on there is no neon lights lighting up. I have switched off at mains to see if any wires are loose but nothing took the front of shower unit off to look in there and all wires are connected. could it be the shower is knackered.

What?????

Please explain what you're talking about. Be clear.

And be patient. You haven't had a reply because both your posts made no sense.

do you mean it is an electric shower?

quite likely a loose wire in the ceiling switch. It might have burned away in which case you will need a new switch and to trim back the heat-damaged wire.

It is usually the black wire.

I have an 8.5kw galaxy aqua shower when i switch it on to get the water hot the red light is dimmer than usual. when i turn the water on the light goes off and none of the neon lights light up on the front of the shower but all the wires are okay.

Where is the red light you mention?

Which wires have you checked?

Has anyone recently put screws, nails or drills into the floor or walls where a cable might be hidden?

Have you got a multimeter? If not, invest £10 in one in the High Street.

Tell us what your Consumer Unit (fusebox) looks like

The red light is the heating switch on the wall.
It was working fine yesterday no one has done anything work wise around the house.
The wires i have checked are your normal earth live neutral behind the switch and behind the panel.
It has a seperate mains switch which seems okay nothing has tripped out.

would the red light on the heating switch still come on though if the black wire had burnt out.

yes

if the neon indicator lights, but goes out when you apply a load to it (e.g. the shower) that is typical of a poor/high resistance connection.

unless the cable has been damaged the trouble is usually at a connection, which might be in the shower, the switch, the consumer unit, or any junction box or repair.

When you buy your multimeter you can test to see at what point the voltage drops off. That will be at the defect.

if you can find one that has miniature insulated crocodile clips or some other gripper for the end of the probes, that can be handy.

thanks john if i remember rightly you gave me advice last year on my light fitting to which was successful many thanks/

Got the amp reader and all reading fine so shower must be dead. Should be easy enough to install, the shower has its own mains box.
I am thinking of getting the same kind so the wireing will be easier to follow what do you think.

It is unlikely to be the shower, if as you said the wall light neon goes on and off
It is more likely the connection in the wallswitch breaking down when the shower is on.

The circuit needs ISOLATING
and the switch needs checking

What do you mean by
"all reading fine"

By the way, for your info derek, when you turn on the switch on the wall, your not turning on any heaters. Only when you "turn on the water" does the heat come on. Its an instantaeneous shower. Think about it, you apply 8.5kw of heat to about 100ml of water, it will evaporate instantly and blow up ;) Water MUST be flowing or the heat will not come on.

(The way you mentioned it, made it sound like the shower has a warm up period before you turn it on. It doesn't)
