The access road at the back of my house has a drain about 8" square, the bottom goes off in one direction but if I put my hand there the pipe/drain goes up again as if it were a U bend but it gets narrower and narrower after the bend and as far as I can feel it is sealed (by the ceramic) so doesn't actually go anywhere.

The drain is a brown ceramic if that helps?

I sit possible this is a type of drain that does not have a pipe connection?

Sounds like you could be describing a storm drain for rainwater. If it was truly sealed it would be full of water, so it must go somewhere. Why are you wanting to know, are you looking to fill it in?

Its likely you have got your hand round the 'U' bend in the drain. It will have an outlet to it, as to if thats connected its impossible to tell without digging it up! I would think it unlikely with a gully of that size you would be able to get far enough around the U bend to tell any more. Sounds like its an old salt glazed gully pot, they do restrict quite a bit up to the outlet, and are usually rectangular in cross section at that point.

Dont really advise you do try getting any further, chance of getting arm stuck..... Personally I wouldnt be fishing around in it anyway, you never know what is in there, broken glass, hypodermics, anything......

I was doing some concreting and it filled up with sand/sludge so I cleared that out but the water was still hardly draining out of it so I thought while I am there I'll try to clear it properly.

Luckily only mud so far!

Why not dig up around where the outlet might be and see what you might find?

I am sure many drains have been fitted in yards and roads which went nowhere. Builder gets paid and drain floods at first rain!

Digging the outlet up is a lot of work, plus I'd have to pay to have the whole lot re-tarmaced.

What got me was it felt as if the casting for the ceramic drain had no exit in the first place I would have thought if a builder bodged the job the drain would have an outlet it would just go nowhere.
