A Smokey Astra 1.7TD

The car in question is a 1998 (S) Vauxhall Astra 1.7 TD

When pulling away and on hard acceleration there is black smoke ( not blue) from the exhaust.

Would this be the norm on a diesel car of this age and milage (114,000)

The car still returns up to 50 mpg and drives superbly, it's just a bit smokey now and then.

Is this anything to worry about, would it fail the emissions test at mot.

Any ideas anybody?

Black smoke suggests it could be lack of air, it may be worthwhile fitting a new air filter.

Black smoke indicates unburnt fuel, could be fuel pump overfueling.

It is perfectly normal for a diesel to puff out black smoke under hard acceleration and also on initial start. Many are fitted with devices inside the injection pump to cope with extra loads. It is more noticeable with turbo engines. Watch any bus starting off or a truck going uphill (even new ones) and you will see it. It is unlikely to effect the MOT, but like ALI says it may be worth changing the air fliter. I always give a diesel an engine service before the MOT anyway just to make sure.

Dave, you have put my mind at rest, I have fitted a new air filter and won't worry about the odd puff of diesel smoke every now and again.
