Someone told me that kids are no longer taught the ABC alphabet because it has no practical purpose. Does anyone know more about this?

They tend to start off with the letter sounds, rather than letter names, as that is more relevant to learning to read, but they learn the letter names too, eventually.

As a child, I was able to read fluently at age 4, but wasn't taught the alphabet when I got to school (I suppose I must have skipped it while changing schools) until aged 10. I learned by word recognition not letters.

There is no particular need to be able to recite the order the letters come in, until you need to index or file things.

Learning the alphabet is not the same as learning to read.

no doubt soon our kids will have to learn squiggles instead of letters - in order to be non racist.
I really dont know why they keep changing things, it seems to me that the more they "improve" the less educated people are.

Only 3 replies in and its begun - Must be a new record......

Back to the original, the point of phonics is that the letter 'b' is pronounced 'buh' in a word, not 'bee'. Learning the alphabet off by heart is irrelevant to learning to read.

Im sorry, I shuoldnt have posted that, Im still angry at the poor kid getting locked up for wanting to learn...
The alphabet is indeed a strange thing when you think about it, but its worked for god knows how long and I'm a great believer in if it works - then dont f with it.

Yeah, I'm a bit grumpy this evening too for some reason. Come here eggplant and give us a big hug ........

Indeed, perhaps they should concentrate more on verb definitions.

Then why is 'phonetics' not spelt 'fonetiks'?

It's just occured to me in a flash of inspiration that the word Alphbet comes from Alpha- Beta or A and B.

Bring back alphabet spaghetti, I say. Can't go wrong.

It's been banned because it contains the letters WGO and they sometimes fall in the wrong order.

Reminding your processed spaghetti eating target market of their overload gross weight is not good business sense.

Well unbelievable as that sounds to me, I imagine its true, and no doubt someone somewhere will either have lost a lot of mony, or made a lot, either way, it is totally ridiculous, you can walk round with f**k rearanged on a tshirt but cant have things that could MAYBE, possibly, on the off chance, if placed incorrectly offend someone. I saw a golly *** the other day and said to the mrs "I thought they were banned" aparantly they are now called golly dollys, I really dont see the problem with the original name. If one day everyone called for eg asian people "king" but meant this as an offence, would the word king then be banned?
This country is well ****ed
