I have an 8 year old Hyundai i10 and the ABS light stayed on when I started to drive today. I know very little about cars but is there anything I can do to attempt a fix before having to resort to a local garage,?

If its the likes of a failing wheel sensor and your knowledge is limited, it seems like a garage job.

Can I suggest asking the question on the Hyundai forum where there's likely an i20 owner who can give you pointers.

Thanks for your rapid reply. Couldn't get your link to work but nevertheless found the site and posted there.

Apologies!

I missed the .com of the end and have corrected the link.

One of the most common causes of ABS failure on older cars is corrosion under the ABS reluctor rings. These are toothed rings that are push fitted to the CV joints and have a sensor that is mounted in a hole in the hub carrier. If you are competent at DIY you can sometimes remove the sensor and see if they have been rubbing on the reluctor rings. The repair is quite simple but does require removing the driveshafts, cutting off the old rings, pushing on new ones and replacing the sensors. It is almost always the nearside ones that fail first by the way. Some ABS sensors are built into the bearings (probably the rears) but the "external ones" are the ones that give the most problems.

Any independent garage will be able to scan the ABS system and can tell you which wheel is at fault - which has to be a good start unless it's the ABS pump that's faulty......and specialists can overhaul these too.
John :)
