Acceptable gap between tiles and basin.

When tiling around a bathroom basin is it best to keep the gap the same size as exists between the tiles generally, say 5mm, or is it acceptable to allow a larger gap? If so, what measurement would be allowable? The reason I ask is that the basin has a slightly curved contour which makes achieving a uniform gap rather a difiicult (for a tiling novice).

Thanks for any help in assisting me avoiding a cock-up. ;)
