A bit of a nosy question but with reason................

If you are a sole tradesman with no employees, how much are you paying your accountant per year and does this include him filling in your tax return or does he charge extra for this???

All depends on how YOU present your books: shoebox full of receipts etc or print-outs from your own bookkeeping program (be it MYOB, Sage or Excell spreadsheet).
I don't pay very much (and doesn't include tax-returns, doing that myself on-line), cause I'm a bookkeeper myself (very handy ;) )

As mentioned above it depends on how much work you do yourself but mine used to charge me about £300 and I would just hand in all my vouchers and receipts and let her get on with it. She is very good at her job though and it was always great value.

He charges 534.25 inc tax return, but papers are meticulously up-to-date. However, he makes a couple of phone calls re queries.

My accountant charges me around £300. However I also have a book-keeper who charges another £100 or so. I have not spoken to the accountant for the last 4 years.

I reckon the book-keeper does most of the work really and the accountant probably just spends a hour filling in a few forms.

I believe you can (upto certain limits) submit your own returns on line if you wish. Having a book-keeper and then doing this yourself would probably be the cheapest option.

I may be a cynic but I reckon most accountants are more interested in making money themselves than saving you money. Unless of course you pay them fortunes!

btw, I am a partner(one of two) and we are both charged this much. We are not a Limited company and our accounts are uncomplicated.

I may be an optimist ;) but my accountant is very interested in saving me money and making our company more profitable. He's just great !

I do however have also different experiences when I was manager of another company. The HO insisted of using one of the 'bigger' chartered accountants firm (while I did most of the work) who even invoiced us whenever we dared to ask a question by phone!

I may be naive but could someone please tell me the secret of paying virtually no tax year on year? Unless you draw no income or income up to a personal allowance and plough all the profits back into the biz, there has to be drawings from net profit and you can't avoid being taxed on net profit. The number of times I've been told "get yourself a good accountant, then you won't pay any tax" has been often over the years. As far as I can see this is rubbish - you can't live on thin air, the taxman knows how much it costs to live, Moz, maybe you'll be having a knock on the door soon from someone wanting to look through your wardrobes

My answer to the original question is this year its about £750 + VAT for work that alot of other accountants charge about £300. I was interested to see what others were paying as I'm cheesed off with being what I believe to be stung

Thanks for the replies

That's a lot. That's about what we pay as a limited company, which I know involves extra work for the accountant each year.

My bill last year was £320. includes tax return and full readout of what my tax will be for 2006. Tho I do my own books and present me reciepts in date order etc. He's very quick take less than a week.
I was with a large company for a few yrs but they were expensive and
useless. took em nearly 4mths to do me books.
