I have a strange problem with our Halstead Ace High combi in that every now and then the CH switches itself on. Even if the dial is set to just DHW hot water is being continually being sent to the rad.s which get very hot. While this is happening the hot water LED (but not the CH LED) on the boiler control panel is lit up, even though no hot water is being drawn. By turning the dial off and back on it seems to sort itself out, but sometimes this has to be repeated a couple of times. When it's heating up the CH loop in this way there seems to be no temperature regulation of the CH system as the rad.s just get hotter and hotter. When it's behaving itself the temperature of the CH system is being correctly adjusted by the dial setting on the control panel.

Weird.

Any ideas about what's going on?

Sounds like you have a problem with the microswitch for your hot water.

Check for leaks around the divertor valve.

Another posibility is that of the CH thermistor being faulty and bringing on the boiler in frost protection mode,

however I doubt this due to your HW LED being on.

Thanks for your suggestion, I'll have a look when I get home.

As an alternative, is this what would happen if the diverter valve was stuck open after a demand for DHW?

Should be able to tell if it is sticking open, by looking at the position of the pin that activates the microswitch the next time this happens, but not sure when it will!
