add an outside light

I'm sure this has been asked before but here goes...I have a double light switch in the hall I want to add an outside light directly behind the switch, can I take the power directlly from the switch?
The house is 2 years old so all wiring is new, could the switch be changed to a three gang, thereby giving me a swich for the outside light?

Most houses have a switched live at the light switch- no neutral, some more modern builds have live and neutral at the switch.

If you intend to use the switch to operate both the existing lamp and the new external lamp, you need to take a feed from the lamp location.

Is it a house or flat?

What wires are present behind the light switch- photo would help.

If you have any sockets adjacent to the external wall, it might be cleaner to provide a 3a fused spur, run a cable through the wall and up to a PIR activated external fitting.

Cheers for that, its a house and I haven't checked the switch yet, just wondered if anyone knew before I investigate as the switches/sockets etc are all filled around with what looks like mastic (which builders seem to use for everything these days) and you have to cut it and re-fill everytime you take one off.
There is a socket on the outside wall so I could use that, its just that the switch is in exactly the right place!
