Hi,

I've just been reading the how to post for adding a new light and switch.

As suggested I intend to add a new light and switch by adding a junction box and spurring off the current circuit. I appreciate this may sound a daft question but I want to be certain. Does the spur need to come off a particular cable in the current circuit? The new light is upstairs, and the ceiling rose for the room next too my new room will be the one I spur off.

I shall be having any work checked prior to anything being switched back on but I would like to do this myself and have it checked and be right first time.

Many thanks
Duncan

The 'spur' needs to come from a cable comprising of permanent live, neutral, and earth.

A switch cable won't be any good at all.

Cool, thanks for the fast responses..!!

The switch cable from the current ceiling rose is a no go, the output to the light is no good so I'm guessing by a process of elimination any other cable to or from that rose is good to spur? Is that right?

Thanks..!!

You need to make sure that where you connect to has the above attributes.
Your rose may have other cables that are not suitable.
Why not connect it at the rose itself, then you should not be able to go wrong……...

Ok, I shall look at how busy the rose is.... I didn't read the bit on the how to for coming straight off the rose. I take it I just bring a cable attached to earth, neutral and the live connector on the loop feed from the supply cable.

Is that the right idea?
