I want to replace the top 3 panels on my door with glass / plastic windows. It looks a simple job to do ... any suggestions though? Is plastic a good option - needs to let light through but does not need to have thermal properties etc.

Based on my measurements, I think 15mm thick is about right?

I can get 15mm Clear Acrylic sheets for £27 each from cutmyplastic.

Or would glass be better? First site I looked at, 15mm glass cut to size would be £52 each ...

I think you might need to have toughened glass in a door, acrylic would probably be better, but I don't think you need any thicker than 10mm.You can also get "glass look" acrylic which may be a little dearer but is difficult to distinguish from glass ( if you are bothered about how it looks)

That's a good point - would need to be toughened ... I think for the money, acrylic might have to be the best option.

it doesn't need to be 15mm thick. You can use glazing tape and move the beads to suit.

acrylic holds dust, and quickly goes cloudy when people try to clean it.

You could use laminated glass if you wanted. 7mm would be suitable. A glass merchant can cut it to size. Toughened cannot be cut and must be ordered from the factory by precise size.

Your door appears to be an old one with M&T joints, so it may have been assembled using machined stiles and rails with the ornamental moulding in them (not loose beading), which you would have to neatly cut out on one side to remove the panels. This is a bit of a job.
