Admiral fridge freezer fault

Can anybody out there give me any suggestions as to what the problem could be with my American style fridge freezer. The unit has stopped cooling or freezing , when swithched on all we get is a load buzzing noise 1 every 4 mins approx , this lasts for about 4 seconds then stops again. I have had a look in the back and i believe the compressor is very hot , not sure how hot this is suposed to be .

if it is so hot that you can bear your hand on it for more than 2 or 3 seconds then you have answered the question already

presumably you are saying that the compressor is nackered , only thing that worries me about this is that my son sats the same thing happened when we were on holliday but then it strted working again a week later. Says it started when he left door open for 20 mins (think may be more like 8 hrs , too many bottles of lager i think ). could this have caused the problem ?????

but on a serious note , if the door is left open , temperature increases and the compressor does need to work hard

it seems that the compressor is likely to be on its way out if not already
