Hi all

I hope someone can answer this query of mine.

I am in the process of completing a loft conversion, which is only to be used for storage, the ceilings are 12.5mm and the joists are 7 by 3 inches.
My query is regarding 22mm T&G 2 by 8 feet chipboard flooring.

1. Can this be cut where 2 pieces meet over a joist?
2. What sort of screw should be used to hold it down?
3. Which side up is the correct, as one side has writing on it ?

Thanks in advance.

The ends can be butted up after cutting and joined on a joist without any problem and you can use 2 1/2 " Chipboard screws for fixing them . Some boards actually say on them " this face down"
but if not it is usually the writing that goes face down.

it might be worth cutting access points to wires or pipes you might want to get to in the future.

Ideally you should only need to cut on the ends nearest the walls and not in the middle of the floor. That's what the T&G is for. Where there is a join between two boards, it should be over a joist or if you can't do that, put a noggin in between the joists for the joint to rest on.

If in doubt about which way to lay if a board doesn't have writing on at all, I tend to go by looking at the tounge of a T&G floor panel and put the side with the most tongue showing uppermost.
