My house exterior is in need of some TLC and I am looking to get quotes to have the work done, it is going to be a big job needing scaffolding so I want to make sure I get all the jobs done that need doing. The main job will be repairing and repainting the windows and stucco and repaining any pointing that has come away. I also what them to look at the roof and gutting.
The soffits and gutting is at least 30 years old, by my reconning the last major refurb was in 1989 and while the gutting seems to work fine, my view is that it should be replaced. The question is with what? As I understand it, guttering can be made from cast iron, steel, aluminium, or PVC. Given that once the new guttering is up I really don't want to have to touch it again for another 30 years I would rather go for a higher quality system that lasts rather than the cheapest. Aluminium seems the obvious choice, light, strong, corrosion free but will PVC do as good a job for less money?
When it comes to replacing the soffits I really don't know what the options are, any advice on options gratefully received.
The roof itself looks fine and there have been no slipped slates in the 18 years we have been here, the felt under the slates is in good nick. Short of replacing the roof I assume there is very little I can ask the builder to do in terms of maintenance, again please offer any suggestions you have.
I will consider any advice given by the builders I get the quotes from but I would be good to have some idea of what to ask for!
The windows were refurbed by Ventrolia about 10 years ago and although they look tatty they work well, are draft free, and the wood is sound.
Thanks
Jasper.
