Hi all,

Would appreciate some advice on trying to repaint my ceiling after some water damage/stains.

The water damage came from a leak in the flat above and has been fixed now and no signs of any further damage since then, so all good there.

The stains are actually only quite minimal and confined to a very small part of my quite large lounge ceiling. So my main piece of advice I'm looking for is about how I can best only paint one section of my ceiling and make it still look ok. I know that's not advised, but I'm wanting to give it a try and see how good I can get it first. I'm thinking I will try and paint in a full section of the ceiling (including quite a lot that does not have any water stains), but just not the full ceiling (which will take a lot a time).

Also wondering if people recommend sanding the ceiling before priming and painting? Some seem to recommend sanding, some don't, wondering when it's best to do so or not?

Any advice would be much appreciated,

Benji

Going to have to sand to smooth that and fill over.
Then sand smooth again.
Zinsser BIN is best for water stains however, Johnstones stainaway is waterbased.

As for painting do you have original paint? If not then the white may not match as white is a colour that's different across the brands...

I find stain sealer aerosol from Screwfix ideal for preventing such stains from bleeding through, and won't notice when overpainted.
