Advice please!

I am renovating an old ex council house in Wishaw - doing the largest bedroom at the front of the house which has not been in use up until now. Have discovered that there used to be a fireplace on the adjoining wall ( it is semi-detached). The fireplace itself is blocked up - it has been cemented over a while ago, but on the floor is a ( unsure of the correct terminology!), metal plate, I guess the base of the fire. It appears to go in underneath the cemented over fire space/ skirting board.

How do I deal with this - can I take it out/up, I would like to do it properly, but if replacing this with floor boarding is going to be very complicated, dangerous or expensive, I might have to think again. It's position is where I am likely to place a wardrobe or set of drawers, so I could cover it with carpet, I guess, but I really don't want to do this if there is a reasonable alternative!

Sorry, I should have explained, this is an upstairs bedroom - and the old fire place base (?? the grate, is that the word) - is directly above where the fireplace is/was, in the living-room downstairs.
