Advice on setting adoor frame in a wall that is not vertical

Hi,

I had to replace some old door frames in our house, however, the house is 100+ years old. Whilst I can get the door frame (jamb?) where it is perpendicular to the wall (i.e. the main door opening) nice and plumb, I have found that the wall itself is not vertical. This means that if the door fame sits in line with the wall (approximately the door frame is the same width as the wall), it is actually way off, with the top hinge being approximately 15mm to far out. This leads to a door swinging open.

One side of the wall has been finished plastered, but the other side (where the hinges will actually mount has yet to be done, although I am able to take the frame out and adjust as necessary. If it move it so that is is plumb, then it sticks out too (or in, depending on where I would locate it) to far from the wall.

I was wondering what might be the best course of action? I was thinking of either scribing the door frame in order that follows the wall once it is set plumb, or these easier option would be to simply mount the top and middle hinges in further - although I may have to relieve the frame to ensure that the hinge doesn't bind.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I'd always install the new frame completely square and plumb, Chris.....it'll be back to haunt you later if you don't!

Tell me about it. Door frames have the bain of my life for the bast week. Whilst they (4) were installed square and plug (apart from this one), 2 were installed under and only header meaning that they were too short, and they simply aren't quite wide enough by a small fraction (1-2mm).

The doors are pre-finished veneered doors and I would rather not be shaving the doors, the the frames have been in and out like the proverbial vicar on the tart.

Still 2 down, 2 more to go.

I hate doors and frames.
