Advice Plastering Aerated Blocks

Have blocked in a doorway with Aerated Blocks, they seem highly absorbent.

My DIY book suggests sealing wall with 1 part PVA / 5 parts water followed by 3 parts PVA / 1 part water.

What's the best base coat plaster to use?

Soak the wall first, if its a kitchen just use render, then finish.

I plan to use a straight edge to get the base coat relatively straight.

There are places where the plaster has fallen off which makes this difficult in spots.

Could I fill these small areas with one coat plaster, or is there a better way to overcome these gaps?
