Hi,

I'm currently in the process of having a new kitchen installed. The distance from the hob to where the extractor may potentially be is too small, i may yet extract using a downdraft extractor. Is it feasible to remove the supporting arch and a course of bricks to increase the height of the chimney opening, and install a concrete lintel in its place ?. I'll probably get a builder in to do it just getting an idea of how intrusive the work will be, but as long as a few acrows and strongboys are placed in situ there shouldn't be any problems i don't think ?. Any information greatly appreciated, thanks.

Install the lintel before removing the arch.
Are you thinking of using the chimney for extraction?

Would the acrows not be required if the arch was left in until the end ?. Potentially would duct out of the side of the breast to the external wall, but also thinking of getting a hob with downdraft extractor and going under the floor.

Use Stongboys with acrows, fit the lintel, then you can remove the arch.
A blocked off chimney requires ventilation to prevent damp.
If there's any condensation in the flue, it'll react with the soot and leach through to the internal surface.

OP,
The Regs height from hob to extractor is 760mm - adding the extractor dimension, say, 200mm to 760mm & it will require 960mm to the lintel.
Extractor Mfr's instructions will give you the info you will need.
Perhaps have a shufti at my 2015 post below?
