We moved into big old house the back kitchen goes off down the yard like it's been extended but it's actually original, there are rooms above it, the old fireplace and breast had been removed from the kitchen, but upstairs the breast is still inflate, so wondering how it had been supported I removed some floorboards, to my shock the brickwork has been left hanging unsupported in the floor space, my question is could we install some extra joists directly under the brickwork to support, I know we'll have to remove the brickwork to floorboard level, would that suffice, the depth of the breast is about 300mm from the wall to front.

The chimney breast will be tied into the wall, so there's not much worry of it coming down. In putting something underneath it, you are just stopping the lower courses coming lose. Post a picture, and we can then suggest a good support method, but in essence, you'll put in a support under the bricks, and then knock in some pieces of slate to push the brickwork upwards.
