I guess floor tilers are very busy in Yorkshire because one guy couldn't quote me for 6 weeks and another who did quote now doesn't return my calls. Probably because the room is an oddish shape and there were a lot of cork tiles to remove.

Having removed the cork tiles myself the information from this site has given me the confidence to do the job and lay 300mm square slate tiles on a level and solid bitumen floor.

I now have everything I need except the adhesive. BAL appears to be the greatest but for a DIYer like me with no trade discounts is too expensive. Local shed adhesives seem to get a 'slating' (excuse the pun) and everyone recommends professional mud/adhesive for the job.

Please can someone recommend a professional product for slate on bitumen that is readily available to a DIYer like me.

All help appreciated.

I used to use Feb Fastset tile adhesive - cost a tenner for a 20kg bag. I suggest you go and ask at your local builders merchants and see what they've got.

Lightening fast response, thanks. I've seen FEB recommended in other posts but have struggled to find it in google or anywhere. Dumb question but presumably FEB is the brand name ?

I have to admit that I thought floor tile adhesive would be too specialist to be supplied by my local general builders merchant but I will call in tomorrow and see what they have.

thanks again.

If its not too far try n&c tilestyle on gelderd road leeds. reasonable prices on adhesives and good quality i use them all the time

I would use a single part flex adhesive bearing mind the bitumen floor. I live in Bradford and can get you it for £18/20kg. If you need some let me know.

I wish I had read your update earlier nellyb. Anyway, to try and cut a long story short my local builders merchants don't sell tile adhesive and I can't find any of the other recommended brands (Mapei, Granfix, Dunlop, Feb) locally so I decided to bite the bullet and get a quote for BAL Rapidset Flex. Called a retailer in Leeds who offered me some discount and despite my credit card screaming stop I headed into Leeds. I called into Topps tiles on the way to check their prices and a very nice man offered me an even bigger discount. Still more than I would like to have payed but a big thankyou to Topps tiles.

No problem mate. At least you know you've got some decent gear that'll do the job regardless of cost (well almost regardless!!) ;)
