Advise on preparing base for small patio

Hi everyone,

I've pulled up a load of 30cm flags from my back garden where most of them were just laid on sand.

I'm going to be laying a small patio for table and chairs and will be putting new gravel around this area.

I've spent a couple of hours researching laying patios but quite a lot of information is different.

The laying of the flags I can handle, but I'm not sure how I would prepare the base with the condition that it's in, it dips quite a lot in some places.

Hope you guys can help.

Just level it (ie rake it and infil the dips) and relay the new slabs on sand/cement

Don't waste your time taking up an existing good base
