AEG washer program knob does not move

Our AEG Lavamat 750 (1985 model) stopped working mid cycle.
The connections to the door latch PCB have been a problem recently so I replaced them with more positive ones but it has not solved the problem.
If you turn the program knob the machine will fill and pump out at the appropriate positions but it keeps doing either ad infinitum, the knob does not move on its own.
If you turn the knob to anything else eg spin, it does nothing. Also, the door release button does not release the door.
I get the feeling that the internal drive to the program function is not working.

Can anyone offer any help?

More than 1 fault on the machine.
Check the carbons in the motor first.
The door could be a broken lever or a knackered door lock.

Thanks sleepyhead, finally managed to check the brushes as you suggested and they were fine.

The thing fills up and heats up to the correct levels but thats about it. It pumps out ok but does not stop and move on when its empty.

The door open button does not open the door, but with the control knob on some settings, a small relay behind the control box clicks in but nothing else happens.

In addition, the control knob never moves. Any help much appreciated.
