thinking about putting a shelf up to put my fishtank on in one of my alcoves. the gap is about 1.2m how much weight could three 47mm x 75mm battons across this width take? (worked out the weight to around 450kg) any help would be much appreciated

check your weight unless the tank is 1.2wide x 1.2 high x300 front to back! even then water will only be 432kg

Its not what the battens will hold, its how well they can be fixed to the walls, so what are your walls made from.

the walls are brick i was going to screw wood to the wall then fix the battons to the top of them. just realised i converted the weight of water from 96 gallons!!!!!!!not 96 litres in that case the weight will be about 100 kg inc tank and stones in it

I would screw/bolt the back batten all the way along the back of the alcove making sure the fixings go through the plaster and hold into the brick. The other two can be supported as you say. Lay a board over the top so the tank is evenly supported and put a layer of polystyrene tiles between tank & board to take up any slight irregularities.
