The merchant where I'm buying Hardibackerboard doesn't have the screws (5.0mm x 25mm PZ2 10mm head.) He didn't know so could anyone recommend an alternative? What is it about them that I need to be looking out for? Thanks

Use any type of screw. Always pre-drill pilot holes.

Any screw exposed to constant moisture will degrade and eventually rust out - Hardi screw, SS screws, brass coated screws or regular screws will last or fail the same course of conditions.

My take on special backer board screws is that they are simply another sales rip-off. I've seen them looking like wet tissue - so much for special.

Not sure about your sizes - Hardie screws for wood frames use: 5.0 x 32 mm P2 with a 10 mm diameter head.

They're very hard and I find chew the drill bit up if you use an impact screwdriver. Screwfix TurboGold are a popular choice but Screw-Tite are very good & have an unthreaded upper that will help pull the board up top the baton.

Don't get Screwfix Stainless - they have a very weak head & will snap. The Zinc screws will be fine.

Thanks. I should have mentioned, it's for my hall floor using 6mm backerboard and they recommended 25mm. I've looked at the Turbogold on the Screwfix site but can't see 5.0 x 25mm let alone a 10mm head.

Use 4x25 or 4x20 - don't go longer than the material you're fixing to - you don't want the screws projecting under the floor.

Remember to use cement based tile adhesive & a 6mm notch under the boards before you screw them down.
