Alternative to plasterboard adhesive

I need to stick on a couple of plasterboard pieces around the window reveals and want to avoid having to purchase a full bag of plasterboard adhesive. Is there an alternative adhesive I can use to create the dot and dab affect?

The surface will then be tiled.

Grab adhesive, or most other plaster like bonding
Or expanding foam

Can I use tile adhesive (powdered mix) by any chance?

Might work, might fail, wouldn’t recommend it but might get lucky

I used this stuff today but without any success....
I first used it on the board and then straight on the wall. Here's the end result:

Also, as seen above, I need this plasterboard to come around 50mm away from the wall. Is there a product other than regular plasterboard adhesive that I can use for this please?

As 23vc said, a bag of bonding plaster will do it.

I thought that bonding plaster was a no-no as a tiling surface as it degrades the adhesive?
I could use plasterboard adhesive but it comes in large packs and I need a tiny amount for this.

Eh? I thought you were trying to stick plasterboard to masonary. In which case as I said, you can use bonding coat. Not sure where “tiling surface” comes in?

sorry @23vc. Mixing posts...
This plasterboard will have tiles fixed to it, which I appreciate hasn't been mentioned in this post.

But even on sticking plasterboard to the blocks, can I use bonding coat? I thought that was a plastering product and ordinarily I should be using the bag of plasterboard adhesive. Or are they one-and-the-same?

They’re not the same, but it can be used. I’d not do a whole wall with it, but have used it for smaller areas, in your case it will be fine. Although, if you’re trying to dub it out a lot, the dri wall adhesive is easier to work with and a bit “stickier”.

But Bonding Coat comes in similar pack sizes to plasterboard adhesive and also costs around £10. I was trying to avoid that as I have so little to stick on.

Can I not use something like this?

Yeah you can, and I said that in my first reply to you above... but if you’re trying to dub it out a lot from the wall, that won’t work so well, your better off dabbing.

Batten it out and screw the board to the battens. I'm surprised the foam didn't stick, especially if you damped down the surfaces first - I've stuck plasterboard to plywood (at the top of a window reveal) and it was rock solid.
