Alternatives to carpet on the stairs not the landings

Hi

I recall us being on hols on a beachside apartment years ago and we were on the top floor 4th floor - had a lift but one day decide to excise on the stairs - the stairs appeared to have leather type stuff on it. It was a 5 star place and i was wearing shoes so no sure if slippery with socks s never tried. The reason I mention it was a 5 star place is it was plush so whatever it was could have been very expensive

My question is, what is the alternatives to carpets on the stairs and what type of nosing would you use as most of the nosoing strips appear to be of the commercial type and sharp
