As 'goodwill' to existing customers they would have been more customer service wise to give a helping hand to those with outstanding orders.

Internet tool companies have been a time bomb waiting to go off for a long time. They need to work on such a small margin, as the only thing they can offer is cheap prices. Most shops will tell you how little profit there is in tools anyway, let alone having to reduce it even further just to be the cheapest at the top of Google shopping.
I know of a couple of internet companies selling tools who work on less than 10% - that's ok if they're selling stacks of product, and don't have much in the way of overheads but when they're a smaller outfit trying to compete it's only going to go one way.
Tool Net were a classic example of someone who hardly kept any stock, and ordered everything in as they took an order over the net. They'd then blame everyone else when the item they had sold didn't arrive with the customer within a couple of days.
One thing about this recession is that it will sort the good guys out from the rubbish, as most of the rubbish won't make it through to the other side.
